Book of changes
To read it is to change it. To see it is to attune with it again. Make sure you won’t forget.
I don’t own many physical objects, or have a wish to own more. Now that everything is digital, and can be gotten with a subscription, what’s the point of buying, and even less physical, right? This is sad, let’s change it. Two reasons:
Space. I can only have so many things. They occupy space. This forces me to choose what I want to own, where to put it, and why. Then these objects become emotionally important to me. Because I cannot have others, because there’s limited space. They are special. My Charmander and Squirtle figures are special. My Kaka Farm book is special.
Memory. With subscriptions, and effectively unlimited digital libraries, I can read, watch, listen to anything I want. But then, without a real object pointing to this knowledge that changed me, it becomes harder for me to remember about this object. Sometimes I can even fully forget I read a book or watched a movie until I get reminded by some reason years after. Physical books, vinyls, Blu-rays, they are easy to remember. They are there, in my shelf.
Bonus one: sharing. Now that all of this catalog is visible, any friend can come and see what I like, and take it with them. I think that’s beautiful.
So I’ll start. With a vinyl!
